What’s Your Claim to Fame?

Being a solopreneur can be a lonely place sometimes, and we need to encourage ourselves against the seemingly impossible challenges we face on a daily basis. How do we do that? By reminding ourselves of the small achievements already done through us. All the pictures with those we never would have imagined being around. The locations, events and even the inspiring words from others who expressed how you’ve upleveled their life, should be within sight to invoke remembering just how powerful you are when you set your mind to it. 

As solopreneurs, we focus on the goals that lie ahead. We plan, create vision boards, strategize and stretch ourselves in order to reach them. Vision boards are important in maintaining momentum, yet I challenge you to also include a “Wall of Fame” in your office space. 

Tokens reflecting our right to claim FAME are not just for the jock and scholar from high school, or the stars in Hollywood.  I personally came to realize that I was missing a Wall of Fame when attempting to update my bio. I couldn’t remember a single new achievement and had to ask others outside of myself to help recall.

As women, we struggle remembering our ‘good’ because we’ve been taught to downplay ourselves, be small and allow others to shine so we won’t appear to be arrogant, vain or selfish. 

We’ve mastered playing small so well, that the brain now automatically disregards many of the things we should be rewarded for.  The most successful people in the world have walls showing their achievements, the milestones that speak the Dream they held for so many years while striving, was not just a wild haphazard delusion…It was all stepping stones to SHINING in their fields of expertise.  I can remember in elementary school yearning to be “Student of the Month” where my picture would be displayed as a symbol of top achievement. Walls or memorials have been used for centuries, were used to remind generations in the Bible of great miracles of yesterday, to be considered for hope today. They also help us not to repeat mistakes in the past.

So remember how far you’ve come by creating your own Wall of Fame.  Start with pictures, certificates, degrees and words. Go back to your social media accounts and search for the forgotten things that will stir your soul into orbit.  Stare at your wall and celebrate!  Walls of Fame are great when used properly–not for vanity, but for the sanity of “I AM enough”, and created to achieve miraculous wonders even now. Take Your Dream from Ethereal to Real in 9 Steps

Many entrepreneurs will tell you that ideas are the easy part — It’s the implementation that separates the successful from the unsuccessful. Turning an idea into reality is a skill that anyone can learn. Managing yourself and daily action are the most important factors.

What would you do if you knew failure wasn’t possible?

 

Follow these steps to create your own reality:

  1. Be clear regarding your objective. Are you clear about what you want? Success is much more likely if your objective is clear and precise. If you’re too vague, the problem-solving functions of the brain can become too confused to operate optimally. Write out what you desire to be, do and have in a journal and/or vision board.  
  2. List your resources. Be aware of all the tools you have at your disposal. You have more to work with than realized. Consider all the people you know that are capable of assisting you. List all of your resources that are relevant to your objective. Perhaps your car, computer, and local library are valuable tools.
  3. Consider the resources you’ll require. Make a list of everything you think you’ll need and compare that list to the list you made of your available resources. How will you make up the difference?

 Most importantly, ensure you have everything you need to get started. Avoid letting the future stop you from taking action today. If there’s something you’re lacking that you won’t need for six months, you can still get started!

  1. Maintain your awareness of your objective. Keep your objective in the front of your mind. The easiest way to do this is to think about it each day. A simple visualization session twice a day is sufficient. Just remind yourself on a daily basis that you have an idea that you want to bring into reality. 
  2. Avoid trying for perfection. Perhaps the biggest obstacle is the belief that success only comes from taking perfect action. This belief is enough to paralyze efforts. Consistent, steady action is enough to reach your goals. 
  3. Make a plan. Avoid waking up each day without a plan of attack. Know how you’re going to spend your day before you go to bed each night. A simple to-do list will guarantee that you can hit the ground running each day. 
  4. Work your plan. Knowing what to do is only half of the puzzle. It’s important to work your plan consistently. Everyone knows how to lose weight, yet there’s growing numbers of people considered obese. Focus on taking simple, effective actions day after day. Remember a river created the Grand Canyon, and your objective is just like that river flowing by consistent action. 
  5. Evaluate progress. Provide yourself with regular feedback. Determine a method of measuring progress and taking regular measurements. Assess if you’re on the right track. How can you enhance your results? Do you need to try another course of action?  Seek to improve your approach based on your evaluations.
  1. Keep going. If you keep working, measuring your progress, and developing an effective approach, how can you fail? You can only fail IF you give up. Enjoy and be proud of the progress you’re making each week. Know that your idea will become a reality.

Success isn’t complicated or only available to certain people. Success is the result of maintaining focus and taking appropriate action each day. If you don’t quit, failure isn’t an option. Nothing is more exciting than turning a dream into reality.

Do you pay your bills on time?  Do you bargain-shopped and DIY like no one’s business? Do you max your investment in your 401(k) with your company?  Do you have both Roth and Traditional IRA’s?  

So… how many of you got excited with the first two questions and then your eyes glazed over and you began the blank stare on the last two questions?  Unfortunately, that happens to many women and it shouldn’t!  If this is you, you are part of a phenomenon that some money experts have dubbed “the female financial paradox.”  What that really means: You are perfectly happy to pinch pennies and hunt down sales, like millions of other women, yet you don’t have the slightest interest in big-picture financial planning.  What that means financially, you are content to chalk it up to doing what you can but not ACTUALLY DOING anything to create wealth or secure funds for your retirement! Why are we so contented to lag behind men in actions crucial to building wealth and security, such as investing and having a long-term money plan.

The gender pay gap is quickly becoming a an idea of a bygone era.  Many of the professional positions we employ have set salary ranges and women have as much power as men to negotiate within those ranges.  If our wages are similar why do men contribute far more to retirement plans? Their median account balance is $31,388, compared with women’s $20,877, according to Vanguard, an investment company.  There are four key factors underlying the paradox.  

1: Lack of Confidence

We mainly do this to ourselves.  Jargon like 12b-1 fee, market capitalization, front-load, back-load, no-load cause many men to feel a sense of pride when they learn what it all means.  Women, however, see it and tend shut down.  We like to talk about how others made us feel dumb and overwhelmed.  As an effect, we blame their actions for us shirking away from financial knowledge.  This mentality causes many women to be fugitives from necessary personal financial planning.  If you are running from it you will never be as well-informed as you should be.  To combat this, find a financial advisor that you know and trust.  If you already have one re-interview them! Just because they earned your business does not make them entitled to keep your business.  

START THE NEW YEAR doing two things.  The first is you should do an annual review with your Financial Planner, Tax Consultant, and your Mortgage Planner.   The second is interviewing Financial Advisors including the one you already use.  They should be helpful and plainspoken.  The should know to use as little jargon as possible unless they are immediately following up with explanations.  Read up on a financial topic before you go.  Ask them to explain it (they don’t need to know you already understand it)!  If they can’t explain clearly a simple financial concept that you already understand how will they explain the more complex ones.  Besides, if they can’t explain it easily do they really understand it themselves! REMEMBER… You should not be embarrassed in not knowing or understanding the financial planning process.  This is not your profession!  It is theirs!

2: Nickels and Dimes

We have become addicted to the small stuff.  We get instant gratification of savings from coupons and sales.  According to a recent Citi Economic Pulse survey, 76% of women regularly clip coupons and 38% buy in bulk.  “When they find themselves hitting up the sale racks, women need to remember that even the best deal they find is worth far less than a smart investment in their retirement fund,” says Eleanor Blayney, the president of the Washington, D.C.–based financial-advisory firm Directions for Women. We NEED TO COMMIT 2018 to moving beyond worrying about nickels and dimes and start thinking big.

3: Living Beyond Our Means

When planning your financial future, you should consider seeing where you would be with only one income.  This goes for women in new relationships, married, divorced, or widowed.  You can’t avoid the turmoil that comes with divorce or the death of a spouse or partner.   Planning and recognizing the inevitable changing of your personal finances could help you make thoughtful, rather than rushed, decisions and provide more solid financial ground.  Unless we die first, statistically speaking we won’t, we must be prepared to transition into being single at some point in our lives.

4:  Numbers not Goals

Money is the means to have the life you want.  Money is the tool to be able to take care of yourself, your family, and achieve your goals and dreams.  STOP HAVING CONVERSATIONS ONLY ABOUT NUMBERS!  You need to start setting goals with your financial plans.  I want to afford to buy a new home, send my children to college, and travel after retirement.  The financial conversations about saving and investing that we have with our financial team should connected to the concrete goals that we have for our lives! After clear goals have been established you can work with your financial team to estimate the numbers and timeline that will coincided with your goals.  This will bring a reality to why those numbers are important!  Your financial team assists you in accumulating the wealth needed to make those things happen!

With today being Veterans Day, I thought about the word allegiance and what it means to not only country, but to the person giving it.  Allegiance is defined as “loyalty or commitment of a subordinate to a superior or of an individual to a group or cause”.  Allegiance is a position one places within a relational system; it lowers or obligates one’s stature under another.

Being a Life Coach, I pondered how after helping a Client see their participation in committing to their parental relationship, had hindered her progress in business.  Let me explain.  My Client, who’ll we’ll refer to as Barbara, could not understand what the hidden sabotages were in being a success in her field.  There would be times Life clearly showed her this was where she belonged and could thrive, yet in private there were struggles in not progressing forward with confidence; which left her frustrated, borderline depressed, ready to give up the business all together and return to a 9 to 5.

After a Coaching session, we uncovered her deep hidden belief in not feeling good enough in the eyes of her parents, had now become her adult truth.  This belief buried into her subconsciousness and guided every decision, in order to create the reality believed.  This false belief kept Barbara from manifesting the REAL truth, of her being fully capable in achieving the success desired.  No matter how painful familiar is, we can cling and duplicate it, recreating the very things that birth more misery.

Only in self-development and asking ourselves empowering questions, can we better understand what the the driving force is behind what we do.  Barbara had committed or had given her allegiance over to how her parents perceived were her capabilities, and that allegiance could not split towards the success of a business led by herself.  Every visit home for the holidays to her family, and how she felt after leaving the negative environment, only reinforced this to be her truth.  Barbara had vested her worth through the eyes of her parents and how they treated her, instead of allowing her achievements to speak instead.

Barbara could now see how this false belief affected her business, self-worth, relationships, finances and even her health; it manifested and weaved itself throughout her life.  Through Coaching, Barbara now has ability to treat the false belief and is now flourishing in her field.

7 REASONS WHY YOU NEED A LIFE COACH

 

life coach tony robbinsOne of the most common pieces of advice that you’ll hear from nearly all self-help guru’s is that the fastest way to success is to find a coach, mentor or role model that can help you achieve your goal much faster.  Have you heard this before?  I know I have.  Everyone from Tony Robbins, Brian Tracy, and countless other “guru’s” preach the same advice.

Yet, most people don’t have a life coach. They resist it.  They think that they can “do it on their own” and often aren’t willing to make that investment in themselves.  In my opinion, this is a trap that most people fall into that holds them back from having massive success in their lives.  It’s something that held me back for years, and if I could go back in time, I would have immediately found a life coach at the start of my journey.  It would have saved me so much stress, time, and money in the long-run.  I’m thankful I’ve learned my lessons now and have had several coaches and mentors in my life.

1. Having A Life Coach Makes You More Accountable.

This is one of the biggest things that can help you by having a life coach.  You all of a sudden become more accountable to follow through on whatever you’re procrastinating on or stopping yourself from doing.  We all place limits on ourselves.  We all have limiting beliefs and patterns that are holding us back, preventing us from fulfilling our true potential.  When you have a life coach that is there to push you beyond your limits and what you thought was possible, a breakthrough happens.  Your entire belief system changes, and you take your life to another level.

Time is the most scarce resource that exists.  You can always make more money, but you can’t get more time. Yet, when we attempt to do things on our own we’re taking the long route and wasting that time away.  This is simply because we don’t know the path ahead and what to expect.

Now, what if I told you that I could give you a GPS system that has the fastest, most efficient way through the jungle to reach your destination?  Not only that, but if you get lost, there will be a helicopter that comes and picks you up and makes sure that you get there.  How much time would you save?  How much frustration, stress, and anxiety would you not have to go through because you already have a proven map?  How much more enjoyable would the process be?  This is what having a coach is like.  They can give you the map because they’ve already been there before, therefor saving you a significant amount of time and get there that much  faster.  They know all the short-cuts, and they are there for you if you get lost to point you in the right direction.

When I first started a business, I had no clue what I was really doing.  I thought I did, because I was reading books and consuming resources, but I still had no clue.  Not having a clue what you’re doing essentially means you’re leaving a whole whack of money on the table that you could be making.  That was the case for me.  Not only that, but I was spending and wasting money in all the wrong areas, that wasn’t producing a return on investment.  When I hired a business coach, he told me exactly what I needed to be doing and I listened.  It was as simple as that.  He gave me ideas I never thought of before, and made me BELIEVE that I could do it.  As a result, I ended up making much more money.

When I committed to transforming my body, I was trying to do it on my own.  I was following programs that I found on the internet or heard from others, and was buying all the supplements and “magic potions” that are advertised in all the magazines and online. I was throwing my money away, looking for the fastest way to my goal, without really knowing what I was doing.  

For my  WBFF Fitness Modelling competition , I hired Dr. Joe Klemczewski who helps athlete’s “peak” for fitness shows.  Before I worked with him, I was doing everything wrong.  I was wasting money on fat-burners and cutting calories far beyond what I should have.  I had totally carb depleted myself and was doing what I saw other people doing on the internet, without knowing what would specifically work for me.  It was very painful and frustrating.  I ended up losing a lot of muscle mass that I had worked so hard to attain (and invested a lot of money with food and supplements to build), and I ended up hitting rock bottom and developing an eating disorder.  I had become a binge eater and became addicted to junk food.  Every 2-3 days I would go on a binge where I would consume a large pizza, a tub of ice cream, chocolate bars, cookies, and donuts – all in one sitting.  It was disgusting, and probably one of the most painful experiences of my life.  I was throwing away my money on junk, while destroying my hard-earned body and precious well-being.  When I hired Dr. Joe Klemczewski, everything changed.  He was able to put me on a nutrition program that was really easy for me to follow, that got me better results than I could have ever dreamed of.  That was one of the smartest decisions I’ve ever made.

I can go on and on with so many other stories and experiences, but overall, I’ve saved thousands upon thousands of dollars by investing in a coach.  When people say, “I can’t afford a life coach”, my answer always is, “You can’t afford NOT to have one.”

I’ve already somewhat mentioned above how having a life coach will save you stress and frustration.  Why try to re-invent the wheel?  It’s already been invented and it’ll be so much easier to just learn from someone that knows what they’re doing.  The stress, pain and frustration that you’ll go through trying to figure things out on your own isn’t worth it.  Trust me.

I was in Southeast Asia working to build a passive income business online.  I was making $30 a month from one of my websites, trying to do things on my own.  I ended up hiring a coach from the  WarriorForum , which is an internet marketing forum.  During my first coaching call with this guy, he immediately gave me an idea that I had never thought of before.  I told him every reason why it wouldn’t work, which was just my limiting beliefs.

That coach ended up explaining to me why it would work and I trusted him, so I did it.  The result?  That website went from making $30 a month to $300 a month passive income.  That was over 2 years ago.  Today, that one little idea that my coach got me to take action on has made me thousands of dollars without having to do anything.  Was it worth it?  You bet.

I’ve learned so much about myself throughout the years by having a coach or mentor.  One of the most valuable things are the lessons and insights you get about yourself.  You’re always getting feedback and discovering more about yourself in the process.  With the hundreds of clients that I’ve coached over the years, there are always patterns or behaviours that I notice that they aren’t even aware of.  Sometimes it’s a story or limiting belief that they keep telling themselves again and again, which is holding them back.  Other times, it’s a way that they carry themselves, their body language or a subtle way that they’re communicating that is putting people off, preventing them from having success in their relationships with the opposite sex. These patterns are often so ingrained in us, that they become unconscious.  We’re unaware of it.

A coach is able to point these things out and help you become aware of them, so that you can change them. Often it’s the little things that make a massive difference.  I’ve seen incredible transformations within people just by making small changes to their way of thinking or how they are showing up.  Most people you’re around on a daily basis won’t point out these things to you or give you feedback, but a good coach does.  A good coach cares and is always honest with you.

benefits of life coachThere are so many ways that we limit and hold ourselves back.  There’s things that we WANT to do, but often aren’t doing simply because we don’t have the belief or confidence in ourselves.  When my coach proposed to me that I compete in a fitness show, I was hesitant.  I didn’t believe that I could do it, and thought it took a certain type of person with a level of discipline and commitment to make something like that happen.  The truth is, I was scared.  I let my fear consume me, and was lacking the confidence in myself that I could do it.

My coach made me aware of this limiting pattern and made me realize what I’m truly capable of.  He believed in me, which gave me a strong level of belief and self-confidence within myself.  As a result, I’ve gained so much in the process to competing in a fitness show.  It’s been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made, simply because I’ve grown so much as a human being throughout the journey.  I’ve had to step up and raise my standards to an entirely new level.

THE BEST IN THE WORLD HAVE A COACH… SO WHY WOULDN’T YOU?

The best of the best have a coach.  The best golfer in the world, Tiger Woods, has a coach.  Michael Jordan, the best basketball player of all time, had a coach. Barack Obama has coaches and advisors in his life. Wayne Gretzky.  Lance Armstrong.  Oprah Winfrey. Donald Trump.  Bill Gates.  Warren Buffet.  Richard Branson.  Tony Robbins.  Arnold Schwarzenegger. Many of the top entertainers, musicians, performers, entrepreneurs, investors, and leaders on this planet have coaches. Successful people have coaches.

Let me ask you, does Tiger Woods need a coach? Does Michael Jordan need a coach?  Of course not! But, by having a coach, they are able to have the edge.  They are able to get MORE out of themselves than they ever could on their own.  Both Tiger Woods and Michael Jordan often talk about the coaches they’ve had and the influence they’ve had in their lives.

The reality is, people that are successful had coaches, mentors and role models along the way.  Nobody did it on their own.  People that think “I can do it on my own” will never make it.  It’s a limiting belief – a story they tell themselves again and again, that is preventing them from having success.

Whenever someone says that they can’t afford something or don’t have the money, it’s NEVER a matter of money.  It always comes down to how committed they really are.  If you are committed to something, you will find the way to make it happen.  Think about it, if someone had a gun to your head and said “I need you to come up with $1000 by the end of the month or I will shoot you”, I’m 100% certain that you would find a way to come up with the money.  It’s because you are committed to it.  It’s that same level of urgency and commitment that you need to have in every other area of your life if you want to succeed.

There’s been many times in my life where I couldn’t afford a coach, or to attend a seminar, or to do something I wanted to do.  But I didn’t let the belief of “I can’t afford it” hold me back.  Instead, my belief has always been “I make the money for whatever I’m committed to.”  And guess what?  I always have.  I’ve always found a way to be resourceful and come up with the money.

There was a time when I wanted to travel to New York to attend a seminar.  I couldn’t afford it.  Did I let that stop me?  No way.  What did I do?  I ended up putting together a car wash fundraiser event, got a bunch of my friends and family to come out, and held up signs that said “Fundraiser Car Wash By Donation”.  We spent an afternoon washing cars and I ended up making $800 in a day and paying for my entire trip.  It’s because I was committed and resourceful.

The truth is, you can’t afford not having a coach in your life.  It’s costing you already way too much in your life.

Think about how even Santa Claus uses the a checklist to ensure his around the world in one night travel plan is perfectly executed; even he knows without a written course of action is planning for inaction.  Take it from the one who has never failed in executing a successful Christmas, that creating a plan for what’s envisioned is critically important.

All kidding aside, studies have shown that people who write down their dreams with the intent to take action on them, are much more successful than those who do not.  There’s power in writing!  There is a Harvard University study of 1979 on the effects of written goals of graduates.  In the study, Harvard graduate students were asked if they have set clear, written goals for their future, as well as if they have made specific plans to transform their dreams into realities. The result of the study was only 3 percent of the students had written goals and plans to accomplish them, 13 percent had goals in their minds but haven’t written them anywhere and 84 percent had no goals at all.  

Ten years later Harvard interviewed the same members of that studied class and found:

1. The 13% who had goals but not in writing were earning on average twice as much as the 84% of those who had no goals at all.

2. The 3% who had clear, written goals were earning on average 10 times as much as the other 97% of graduates all together. The only difference between the groups is the clarity of the goals they had for themselves.

With 2017 right before us, it’s our hope at OWNetwork that all our Queens have written their dreams into a living plan of action with dates of expected completion.  We say ‘living’ due to the fact this goals can be modified as time progresses; yet the ultimate end remains determined.  Give yourself the next 12 months to test the theory of planning for success, and see at this exact time next year, greater accomplishments will be achieved.  You and your dreams are worth the investment of it.

What’s Blocking My Success?

If you are not living the life daydreamed about, it’s probably attachments standing in your way. Every negative emotion is the result of one or more attachments. The simplicity of just letting go of them is the one way to free yourself and enjoy unlimited success.

Several attachments impede progress and success:

  1. The need to be comfortable is the greatest obstacle to success. It’s perfectly normal human nature to seek out comfort. There are few, if any, greater drives than the desire to be comfortable; yet success lies on the other side of comfort. Comfort comes from the familiar, but familiar never brings change.
  • Embrace discomfort. Honor the role of discomfort in your life to bring out the very things you hope for or desire.  Understand that your uncomfortable feelings mean you’re doing something new. New actions bring new results and the results might be exactly what you’re looking for.
  1. The need to be right is a close second. It’s human to be wrong about many things. However, if you feel the need to be correct, there’s no room for the truth. Instead of wanting to prove you are right, seek the truth. Spend time building a more accurate map of your world rather than trying to force your current map on reality. 
  2. Attachment to your identity is another obstacle. Do you see yourself as an ineloquent person? If so, you’ll never become a great orator. Do you believe you’re naturally a heavy person? A lean, healthy body will always be out of reach.
  •  It’s very challenging to create a reality that clashes with your identity. Why are you attached to your opinion of yourself? Let it go and see how great you can become. You have nothing to lose.
  1. Are you attached to your habits?  Life is the ultimate expression of our habits. Our lives get a little better or a little worse each day depending on the quality of the decision made. Over several years, your habits dictate the quality of your life. If you can’t give up your current habits, stuck exactly where one stands, one will remain.
  •  Many success experts believe that the development of new, effective habits is the cornerstone of success. Let go of old unbeneficial habits and make room for the new.
  • It might be necessary to develop habits like learning each day, networking, exercising, or reviewing your goals regularly to reach a new level of success.
  • Habits are another way we comfort ourselves. It’s uncomfortable to break old habits and to create new ones (let this feeling of being uncomfortable be a sign you are on the right track).
  1. Attachment to places and people can also limit success. Many of the best opportunities can be in other locations. Are you attached to your hometown, state, or even country? The world is a big place. The best opportunity for you might not be within 25 miles of your front door.  Can you imagine how different Oprah Winfrey’s life would have turned out if she would have stayed in that little town in Mississippi?  Would she have become the global icon she is today if not for removing herself from her land of familiar and what family knew best?
  • We often become attached to places because of the people there. It’s not easy to leave friends and family to attain success.
  • The people in our lives are also habits. Think of other successful people you know. Describe the people they spend time with on a regular basis. Compare that to the people in your social circle. Can you see a difference? Moving ahead often means letting go of certain people.

Attachment can be limiting. If success isn’t coming quickly enough, your attachments are part of the challenge. Examine your tendencies and determine which are impeding progress. Be willing to change and accept another viewpoint. Many attachments are pleasurable in the short-term, but painful in the long-term. Release them and enjoy greater unblocked success.

Building a business all by yourself is not only a daunting proposition, it’s also an extremely lonely venture that could potentially be much more fun and effective if only there were a few more brains in the mix.

If you’re running your business alone, it’s imperative and in your best interest to surround yourself regularly with the right people. Fortunately, finding those people is becoming easier and easier — and it doesn’t necessarily mean you have to go through the difficult task of finding a co-founder or business partner.

Meet with like-minded masterminds
Across the country, a new wave of communities is sprouting up. It’s practically becoming a movement, and it’s committed to supporting small-business owners and entrepreneurs. You can find this taking place at co-working offices, targeted networking events and incubators that host “mastermind” meetings and facilitated problem-solving forums.

“It’s hard to achieve anything great alone,” says Lewis Howes, an author and lifestyle entrepreneur. Howes regularly runs “mastermind” meetings, where like-minded people come together and share ideas to help each other reach goals. In a mastermind meeting, which can be held on a weekly, monthly or as-needed basis, everyone is accountable to support each other’s venture and provide constructive feedback based on his or her own expertise.

Seek out formal training and support
This kind of support isn’t exclusive to Silicon Valley — you can also find it across the country at business incubators and co-working hubs. “Accelerators and incubators are like good MBA programs,” says Christian Renaud, principal of business incubator StartupCity Des Moines.

StartupCity Des Moines was founded to support the explosion of new technology startups in central Iowa and to expose entrepreneurs to other business owners, mentors and educators. “You benefit as much from your peers as you do from the formal curriculum. You end up learning from each other’s successes and failures, so the teams get better, faster,” says Renaud.

When it comes to networking, it’s common to start finding yourself at events where all the faces are familiar and all of the conversations seem to be the same. Fortunately, unique opportunities are now popping up nationwide to assist business owners who are looking to network and talk through their complex business problems.

Problem-solve with people who aren’t exactly like you
“The most brilliant people in the world can’t get to a compelling solution if they aren’t aligned on how they’re getting there and how to talk through it,” says Jason Wisdom, co-founder of The Design Gym. The New York City-based Design Gym is an educational company that teaches a methodology for solving problems creatively. Its community is made up of teachers, novelists, entrepreneurs and bankers.

“Those diverse lenses coming together and looking at the same problem is what makes for unique and interesting solutions,” Wisdom says. “We’re seeing the beginning of much more loosely defined teams.”

Network with people you wouldn’t normally meet
Another uniquely designed networking event is Wok+Wine. Here, strangers gather to eat prawns, drink wine and talk business. Over 120 events have been held in 10 countries.

“By having to explain your concept to someone with a very different perspective to you,” says Wok+Wine Chief Engagement Officer Peter Mandeno, “you find gaps that need addressing or opportunities that need exploiting.”

The best communities and events aren’t just about meeting new people — they add value and help attendees gain insights for achieving goals. Whether a mastermind meeting, a co-working environment or a networking event, these gatherings have led to attendees finding business partners, vendors and customers. Some have even found more long-term mentors and advisors.

It may sound intimidating, or you may be wondering why you should invest time in something that isn’t directly related to running your business. But remember — building and maintaining a strong and diverse network can provide a significant boost as your business grows, pivots or looks to transition.

“Even the best entrepreneurs can learn from one another,” says Renaud.
